Have you ever wanted to be seen and heard by all & sundry. Well, why not make your homepage and do just that. We’ll help you on your way..read on...
First of all the requirements are: a) Atleast a 486 PC b) Internet access c) A basic knowledge of HTML editing tools
Tools : You can use Microsoft frontpage 98, Hotmetal, Hotdog, Tarantula, Dreamweaver etc. which are all available on various PCQuest and Chip CDs.We used Frontpage as it is easy to use and fully WYSIWYG.
Creating the page: Once you have the software installed, it’s time to make your web page. These tools are intuitive and can be used like MS Word. Fiddle around to get a feel of the software. When you’re ready to go; remember to first make a mental outline of the structure of your site(i.e. what links to have, their content, their order etc). Remember to name your initial page as index.html. Keep graphics to a minimum required to get the message across. Store all your page related files in one directory and be organized. Remember to keep all graphics files along with your HTML page since unlike Word, HTML creates references to your graphics and does not embed them.
Getting Webspace : There are a lot of free web providers out there likeTripod - www.tripod.com; Fortunecity - www.fortunecity.com ; Angelfire - www.angelfire.com; Geocities - www.geocities.comAll have their own advantages, but we have used tripod as it is stable and gives 11MB of space.
How to Join :
Step1 : If you have an email account, goto step 2 else goto www.hotmail.com, www.rocketmail.com etc. and create a new account.
Step 2: Goto www.tripod.com & click on member services map. Fill the form onscreen and choose a member name. Remember that the member name will be your web page address eg. https://members.tripod.com/~name. If the name you choose is already taken keep on trying with different ones till it is accepted. The names are case sensitive. You also have to specify your email address in the form.
Step 3 : Now after some time, tripod will send a mail with your password to your mailbox. Now you are ready to log in.
Step 4 : To log in goto http://homepager.tripod.com, click on homepage housekeeper and give your member name and password supplied by the email provider and log in to your member directory. There are various services available in the homepage housekeeper like page building, editing, uploads, deletion etc. which are intuitive in nature.
Step 5: Uploading : If you have Tcp/Ip go to 5.1 or if you have shell goto 5.2
5.1 : Go to your member directory as in step 4. Choose the upload files option. Choose 5 files from your HDD using the browse button and press upload. If you don’t see the upload button, upgrade your browser to IE 4.01 or Netscape 4 ..(it’s worth it!) and then retry.
5.2: Shell accounts can upload only from home directories. First goto your unix prompt in VSNL and give the command sz -be.Then in hyperterminal invoke send file using zmodem to send one file at a time to VSNL. Remember to free space up in your home directory. After the files are there, goto the FTP option in the menu. Give the command ‘open ftp.tripod.com’. Give your member name & password as before. Now use the ‘mput’ command to place the files on tripod.
Step 6:Now go to https://members.tripod.com/~name (name is member name) and check if it loads up. If yes then rejoice else go back and crosscheck to see what you left out. Best of luck! See u on the Net!
